We had a wonderful turn-out for the junior tennis last Wednesday with 26 kids. The junior tennis clinics are on Wednesdays 10:00-11:00 (Golf is offered 9:00-10:00 on Wednesdays). This clinic is free to the children of members and only a $10 charge to others. Please spread the word if you know of any families with children who may be interested in trying tennis and/or golf.
We also have two smaller group lessons available on Friday mornings from 9:00-10:00 or 10:00-11:00 for $10 per child. Please call the pro shop 756.6118 if you would like additional information.
Due to the junior clinic, the Wednesday morning drills has been moved to 9:00. This is open to all skill levels and the cost is $10 per person.
The Thursdays and Sundays ladies group play is at 4:00.
USTA season is underway
The 2.5 ladies will begin their season this Wednesday at Florida Tennis Center. Their schedule is posted at the tennis courts so everyone is welcome to come out and cheer them on.
The 3.0 men won their local season and will be playing in the Sectional tournament at Sanlando Park in Orlando July 11-13. Their tournament schedule will be posted as soon as it’s available. They will be playing on hard courts for their tournament so when you see guys playing on our hard courts during the middle of the day, know they aren’t really crazy they are just practicing!
The 4.0 ladies also clinched their local season. Their Sectional tournament is at Florida Tennis Center July 11-13 and their schedule will also be posted as soon as it’s available.
It’s not too early to be thinking about your GVTL teams. August will be here before we know it!
USTA Mixed Doubles
The 18 & over league should start mid-July and be completed by September. The 55 & over league season is tentatively set to begin mid-August. As a reminder, mixed doubles is a male and female playing together and there are three lines of doubles played for each match. The levels being offered are 2.5, only 2.5 players playing together, and 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0, where you combine the two players ratings. If you are interested in playing (and especially CAPTAINING) on a team please let me know. I’m happy to put up a sign up sheet if we have enough interest to form a team.
Re-claying has begun. Courts 3 & 4 have been completed and courts 5 & 6 are next on the list followed by 1 & 2. The re-claying process is a long one that involves drying the courts, removing all the “dead” clay, adding the numerous additional #50 bags of new clay, watering and rolling, all of this while keeping the desire for court reservations met. We hope (weather & scheduling permitting) to have the other four courts completed within the next month.
The two lights that were out on court 3 have been replaced.
The codes for the restroom locks have been changed. If you do not remember them then please see one of the tennis staff for the new code.
Sharon has moved to Vermont full-time to be closer to her son.
Jalen graduated from Spruce Creek High School and will be leaving us the end of the summer to attend University of South Florida.
Chas will be having knee surgery July 3rd and will return to work after his recovery, I’m sure better than ever.
We have a new addition, Joe Jaindl has joined our staff. He will be doing court maintenance as well as giving lessons. He is a very strong player, a great help with the juniors and will be an asset to me and Jeff as we continue to grow our program here. I hope that you will make him feel welcome!
As always, we are trying to make your club the best it can be and continue to improve the tennis program so feel free to let us know your suggestions.
Thank you and hope to see you on the courts!
